Rabbit Proofing

The most important part of bunny proofing a room or area is making sure that all wires are where your rabbit(s) can't get to them. For some reason, rabbits like to chew on wires. This can be aggravating when you have to go out and replace all your wires, but can also be dangerous to your rabbit. To stop them from chewing you can try a couple of things. At most home improvement stores, and online rabbit supply stores, they sell wire protectors. This is usually some type of flexible plastic covering that goes over the wires so that when your rabbit chews on it they don't damage the actual wires. Some pet stores also sell a bitter tasting spray that you spray directly on wire and other surfaces that rabbits might be tempted to chew on. That way your rabbit learns that the wires taste bad, and stop chewing them. If you use something like this, make sure it is safe for rabbits; it should say that it is on the bottle. You could also block access to the wires with furniture, but be careful if this is all you do. Bunnies are curious and if there is a way for them to get somewhere they're not suppose to be, they'll find it!

It's important to provide your rabbit with lots of chew toys. If he/she has things to chew on, it's less likely that they'll ruin your stuff. If you have any house plants, make sure they're out of your rabbits reach.

If you have any low shelves, your rabbit will probably get into the stuff on them. If you can, place books and anything else they could chew on above their reach. If you can't move things from these areas, and for other areas such as wooden furniture, use the spray repellent. If the repellent you buy in the store doesn't seem to work for your rabbit, try one that smells different.
